Bargue Drawing

 

Bargue’s Cours de Dessin provides a rigorous and highly effective method for developing the fundamental skills required for accurate representational drawing. Through the careful study and copying of Bargue plates, students are trained to observe with greater precision, establish proportion and placement, and understand the geometric, structural, and tonal relationships that define a subject.

The exercises are designed to develop not only technical control, but also the ability to see and measure objectively. Particular attention is given to the relationship between parts and the whole, the organization of shapes, the comparison of proportions, and the gradual construction of form. Students learn to identify and correct discrepancies through sustained observation, developing a disciplined approach that forms the foundation of more advanced drawing.

Bargue’s method is introduced alongside other selected exercises and instructional material to establish essential principles of drawing and to provide students with a structured understanding of technique. As the student progresses, carefully selected master drawings are assigned for extended study and copying. These works offer an opportunity to examine how accomplished artists have resolved proportion, line, structure, value, edges, and the organization of the image.

The purpose of copying master drawings is not simply to reproduce an existing image, but to understand the decisions underlying its construction. Through close analysis and sustained practice, students begin to recognize different approaches to drawing and to incorporate these principles into their own work.

The knowledge acquired through these studies is subsequently applied to drawing from life. The transition from the controlled conditions of a master copy to direct observation allows students to test and reinforce the principles they have learned while developing greater independence, accuracy, and confidence in their ability to see and translate the subject.
